The red carpet at music awards shows isn’t as stuffy as the ones at other awards shows, like the Oscars or the Golden Globes. Musical artists seem to feel more comfortable experimenting with their looks. That said, there were some hits, misses and surprises on the red carpet at the 39th annual American Music Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday night. The highs and lows were as diverse as the looks themselves.
Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber, who are dating, were the best-dressed couple. The two offered a modern interpretation of 1930s silver-screen glamour. Ms. Gomez’s Armani champagne drop waist gown had just enough fringe to avoid being too literal or giving off a granny vibe. Mr. Bieber’s pomade-coated hair was as shiny as his patent-leather sneakers, but it worked. Pairing high tops with a velvet tuxedo was an interesting mix of textures. The combination made it his own, not to mention age-appropriate. The only hiccup was the fit. His shirt and jacket should have been a bit smaller, and it looked as though he were trying to make his tuxedo pants fit like denim.
