Bad Spider-Man Broadway Reviews Hurt the Actors

Spider-Man on Broadway was an extremely expensive production and, according to critics, not worth the money.
Spider-Man on Broadway was the most expensive show of all time, coming in at $70 million to produce and, unfortunately for those involved with the show, garnering bad reviews in the process. Actress T.V. Carpio calls the bad reviews "crushing." She expanded in an interview with Blackbook magazine, noting, "It sort of banded everybody together. Of course it’s crushing when somebody doesn’t like your work, but it’s like we felt that they were not judging a finished product. It’s like coming to a new restaurant and eating the food before the whole menu has is done."

The show has been revised in the wake of the reviews, with Julie Taymor removed and new music added by Bono and The Edge. Carpio, who plays the character Arachne, notes, "I don’t know if nervous is the right word, because we’ve done it so much now. It seems that people really liked it before, and people really like it now. It’s to be expected that some people like the other version more, and some people are going to like this version more, and some people are going to like both."

Carpio waxed philosophic about the critics, saying, "Critics are human. They’re going to say what they want to say, and I can’t control that. I can do my best, and we’ve had both the privilege and not so privilege of having so many reviews." Whatever the notes from the critics, Carpio and fellow cast members are hoping that the bad reviews won’t hurt the production too much, and hope that the changes will make it more popular among those seeing the show
