An Unexpected Request

the designer Charles Nolan made an unexpected request. He wanted his store in the meatpacking district to remain open, no matter what happened to his label.

Mr. Nolan, who was 53, was a charming man who had a terrific run in the bridge sportswear market early in his career, as a designer for Bill Blass, Anne Klein and Ellen Tracy. Through the Fashion Institute of Technology, he was also a mentor to countless designers. Still, his signature label, founded in 2004, was not so well known that you would have imagined a long future for his homey little shop, where the racks of smart coats and sequined dresses were positioned beneath overflowing displays of family photos, sketches and a video projection of a fireplace.

It hasn’t been easy, but it has survived, with some significant alterations
